Xanalys Awarded Funding for Technology Strategy Board Project

In late 2009, Xanalys was selected by the UK Technology Strategy Board to conduct a funded research project to look at improving the utilisation of text mining in investigative analysis.

Project Leader, Alan May, explained the problem the project was addressing.

“Investigations can generate huge amounts of information, often in the first days or weeks when documents and data are coming from many different sources. Faced with increasing levels of information to sift through, how do investigators decide where to start with the processing of this material – what documents contain the most relevant information to my investigation at the present time?

The dangers of this situation are that documents may not get reviewed in a timely fashion, important leads are not being followed up, or inversely, valuable resources are spent following up what turn out to be dead-ends.”

The project used 3 different techniques – text mining, entity matching and data visualisation – to provide users with a way to rank documents based on their relevancy to the current state of the investigation. Using data derived from real cases, the Xanalys solution consistently ranked key documents in the top 2% of total document numbers.

Work on the project involved collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University’s Communication and Computing Research Centre in the design of the visualisation methods used to indicate relevancy and provide users with the ability to visually explorer the links between document content and case information.
